To Our Shanti Bhavan Community,
I have some great news to share: We have confirmed that three of our amazing girls from Daughters of Destiny – Shilpa, Manjula, and Preetha – will be joining us at our gala on November 9th at the Bowery Hotel in New York City.
Please join me at the event, meet our students, and help us build our second school.
I look forward to sharing this momentous occasion with you,
Dr. Abraham George
Learn about Shilpa, Manjula, and Preetha and come meet them in person at the 20th Anniversary Gala. Your invitation is waiting.
Born into a poor rural village, Shilpa witnessed crime, domestic violence, alcoholism, and poverty as a child. Shanti Bhavan provided a respite, allowing Shilpa to be the first in her family to finish high school. She then went on to complete her Bachelor’s in Journalism and Master’s in Psychological Counselling. Shilpa recently published her first memoir, The Elephant Chaser’s Daughter, where she chronicles the joys and pains of navigating her two different worlds, and all the lessons she has learned along the way.
Seeing the people in her village struggle with a lack of good medical care stoked in Manjula a passion for a career in medicine. After graduating from Shanti Bhavan, she entered nursing school and began visiting impoverished communities, educating them on how to lead healthier lives. After graduation, she hopes to open her own clinic to help build a better future for her family and others.
Preetha’s poetry says more than we ever could about her hopes and dreams, as well as the challenges she’s faced in her young life. Next year she will graduate with a Bachelor’s in Political Science and History. She hopes to find a career that ignites her passions and allows her to help her mother and brother, with whom she has grown closer since the tragic recent death of her father.
