A Letter From Our FounderDecember 11, 2018
December 11, 2018
Dear Friends and Supporters of Shanti Bhavan,
As the year soon comes to an end, I am happy to share the good news that Shanti Bhavan has made significant progress in a number of major areas. Academic performance has steadily improved over the years, and the graduating class of 2019 is expected to score above 85% in the upcoming national board examinations. Major infrastructure improvements are being undertaken, new bedding has replaced 20-year old mattresses, kitchen equipment and supplies have been upgraded, and more classroom resources have been acquired. Children and staff enjoy their meals with a variety of dairy products since the purchase of three higher-grade cows, and our vegetable farm has expanded to grow a wider range of crops. With even more special attention being given to children who have faced trauma at home, we are able to strengthen their sense of overall well-being. Anyone visiting the campus can readily witness the result: happy, active and focused children.
In the twenty-one years that have passed since Shanti Bhavan opened, over one hundred children have graduated and attended some of the best colleges in India. Now, most are working in top companies or undertaking postgraduate studies. These young adults are doing what we were so confident they would do – taking care of their families – as the primary or sole breadwinners, and helping others in their local community. All of us who have followed their journey could not be prouder!
Since the release of last year’s four-part NETFLIX docuseries, Daughters of Destiny, there has been much world-wide interest in Shanti Bhavan. Many are eager to learn how we bring up our children, and how they in turn go on to spread that impact by transforming their families and communities. Shanti Bhavan is seen as an effective way to address poverty alleviation, one that ensures life-long results. I am very thankful to all those who have been part of the lives of the children. As supporters and friends of Shanti Bhavan, you can be proud of what you have made possible. Your contributions have been crucial in helping our students reach their potential. These children have already shown that they can be successful and compassionate leaders in their chosen fields of work. Together, we pursue widening our mission to include a second school, another haven of peace where many more children can grow up in an environment that promotes their well-being and empowerment.
I end this note with a request: please consider a year-end contribution to Shanti Bhavan by sponsoring a child or making a donation. Many companies offer plans to match funds for charitable contributions; if such a plan is available to you, enrolling yourself in it can help Shanti Bhavan even further. Please consider what you can afford; every donation matters. We need your help now more than ever before. Please do not postpone your decision. On behalf of the children and staff of Shanti Bhavan, I wish you and your family the very best for the holiday season and the New Year.
