Shanti Bhavan Celebrates Its 5th Graduation with Four Days of Festivities!

July 9, 2014

Dear Friends,

At the beginning of June, we celebrated the graduation of our fifth class of Shanti Bhavan graduates and the second class of college graduates. Graduation is always a time of great joy here at Shanti Bhavan, and so for this year one of the many things we did was put together a video of our children dancing to Pharrell Williams’s “Happy”!

Shanti Bhavan is Happy!

There was three nights of singing, dancing, and skits. Every night, the children amazed the crowd with their diverse array of talents and embodied the weekend’s theme: never be afraid to dream. Children, volunteers, teachers, aunties and administrators all participated in the fun!

Rahul (11th grade) and Nandini (12th grade) serve as MCs for a night.

The choir sang several pieces, including "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" from Disney's classic film The Lion King.

Student artists pose with several volunteers in the beautiful art gallery.

The celebrations also extended to the sports fields. Shanti Bhavan graduates returned from college to face off against the current Shanti Bhavan teams in basketball, soccer, and volleyball. The current students proved victorious in many hard-fought matches, gaining bragging rights over their elders for the time being!

The rest of Shanti Bhavan watches the graduates (blue) take on the SB students (orange).

Some of the 10th and 11th grade girls dance during the tug-of-war competition.

The weekend concluded with the official graduation ceremony, which was a huge success. Several distinguished guests traveled far to take part in the commencement festivities.

Along with speeches by Dr. George, Ajit, and Miss Beena, we heard from several graduates’ parents. Finally, the valedictorian of the graduating class, Manju Kumar, captivated the audience by speaking about his classmates, his family, and the central importance of Shanti Bhavan in his personal development.

Dr. George urges the graduates to continue to dream and work to excel in college and beyond.

Manju Kumar, the class valedictorian, addresses the crowd in a passionate speech about his journey through Shanti Bhavan with his class.

Sowmani (12th grade) served as the MC for the graduation ceremony.

This year’s graduates are joining their upper-classmen in several elite colleges in Bangalore. The college graduates are entering their professional careers with jobs from prestigious firms such as Goldman Sachs, Deloitte, J.P. Morgan, and Ernst & Young. We are proud of each and every one of them!

Please consider supporting the Shanti Bhavan College Fund as a way to help us make a college education a reality rather than just a dream for these wonderful students. Click here to find out how!
